Memorable Seasons and Unforgettable Games
Some games you never forget. This archive gathers a fan's-eye collection of Blue Bombers seasons and moments that still get talked about — the triumphs, the heartbreaks, and the ordinary afternoons that turned out to be anything but. It is a living scrapbook, added to as memory allows.
The 1935 Breakthrough
It began with a shock to the establishment. Winnipeg's 1935 championship — the first ever won by a Western club — announced that the balance of Canadian football had shifted west for good. Fans still cite it as the origin story of the modern prairie game, and you can read more on our Grey Cup page.
The Bud Grant Golden Age
The late 1950s and early 1960s were a blur of glory. Four championships in five years under Bud Grant made Winnipeg the team to beat, and the overtime drama of the 1961 final remains a high-water mark for the whole league. For fans of a certain age, this was simply how football was supposed to feel.
The 1984, 1988 and 1990 Revival
After lean years, the 1980s delivered a renaissance. Three championships in seven seasons re-energized the fan base and produced a fresh set of heroes — the linemen, quarterbacks, and playmakers who fill our legends page. The 1990 title, in particular, would have to sustain fans through a very long wait.
The Long Wait, and a Single Play
The drought years were not without magic. Even as championships proved elusive, individual brilliance kept fans coming back — none more so than Milt Stegall, whose late-game heroics produced some of the most replayed highlights in league history. Sometimes a single, impossible play can carry a fan base for a season.
2019: A Prairie Catharsis
And then, at last, the release. The 2019 championship ended twenty-eight years of longing, with a hometown hero carrying the load and a whole province exhaling at once. It is, for a generation of supporters, simply the greatest day. The 2021 repeat proved it was no accident and confirmed a new era of contention.
Add Your Own
Every fan has a game they'd add to this list — a first match with a parent, a freezing playoff upset, a meaningless summer win that somehow meant everything. That is the beauty of following a team: the archive is never finished. Wander back through our full timeline to place these moments in context, and keep making memories of your own.
