For the list of all the ratings, scroll down to the bottom of this introductory thread. Don't read the bottom if you don't want the ratings spoilers!![/color] [/b]
10 points for each of the following categories. Total out of 50. Simple stuff!

Structure and Plot
- see if the plot is predictable;
- some plots can be unpredictable, and it gives you enough room for evaluation;
- structure encompasses the idea of 3 acts - introducing the main characters, mounting tension through the story, and the ending part;
- a plot has to correspond to characters motivations;
- before the ending, there has to be the highest point of tension.

Characterization
- concentrate on any/all movie characters;
- see if the way they dress, talk, act, look come naturally from their characters;
- character motivation makes the audience believe the story is true; moreover, it helps understand what is hidden beneath.

Dialogue
- good dialogues are not too long;
- don’t concentrate on looking for realism in dialogues; instead, look for logical development.
-Look for body language – do actors’ gestures correspond to their words?

Scenes
- the scenes have to stay focused;
- they have to develop more smoothly as part of a longer dramatic unit;
- scenes should at least be part of the chain that makes up the story;
- they should typically contain conflict, and the character typically reacts to the conflict with a change in mood or direction.

Entertainment
- In other words, WAS I ENTERTAINED!!??

thats a good idea (especially the 50 divided by 5) I do something similar on IMDB.com as I've watched 1000's of movies and can usually give an unbiased opinion on movies even if they arent my cup of tea in general.

It's tougher to do the new movies unless your willing to shell out the dough to see them in the theater but I like to go to the vid store and rent unknowns too to hopefully find some hidden gems and give people a heads up... sadly there is a reason most of these movies never hit the big screen lol prime example is one i just watched called Ninja Cheerleaders... the name is about the best thing going for it

:lol:

Slumdog Millionaire2008

Structure and Plot
If you live under a rock and haven't heard how successful and acclaimed this movie was, then I suggest to get out of that rock and see this movie. It won I believe 8 Oscar awards and completely blew everyone away. The premise of this movie is about a young boy who is on a Hindi version of Who wants to Be a Millionaire. It seems simple doesn't it? Well after breezing through the show, he continues to get all the answers correct. It is later perceived that he could be cheating, but what everyone doesn't know is that the answers to all the questions have occurred throughout his life. The plot makes sense, I found it a tad slow at times, but it picked up right away. The movie was, Question, flashback, answer. It was done in such an incredible way.

Characterization
You wouldn't know many of the stars of this movie, in fact I'm sure you knew of none of them before the movie came out. It works out okay, there is great chemistry between the lead star Jamal(Dev Patel) and Latika(Freida Pinto.) And let me make this clear, if you are a guy, you will fall in love with Freida, she is beautiful and really gives her character all she can give. It was great to watch using a Cineplex Coupons. You also are drawn in by Jamal. This was Dev's first full length movie, and I think he portrayed his character and achieved amazing success. The fellow cast did a wonderful job as well.

Dialogue
This was the only hard part of the movie that was a tad hard to follow. I had a hard time with the accents at times. It doesn't hinder anything, but sometimes I'd really have to pay attention. It wasn't a bad thing, maybe it brought me into this movie a lot closer than I would have. I found the dialogue to be very fast, very smart, and very engaging. I was drawn into conversations between Jamal and Latika, You could tell they had chemistry and even so, I would assume off the set, they were in a relationship...it was that real!

Scenes
That’s emblematic of what makes “Slumdog Millionaireâ€Â

good review!

T.F.:

What are some of the best unknowns you have seen?

Any Japanese horror, suspense flicks?

I look forward to your reviews, viperj.

Have you seen The Watchmen? I checked it out not too long ago. While I'm not really into graphic novels, I enjoyed it. Political and history buffs would like it as well as it is kind of an alternate universe as if superheros really existed in the '60s-'80s. And, they interacted with the likes of Nixon, JFK, The McLagulan Group, Lee Iacocca, and many others that I'm probably forgetting. (there was even a fast recreation of the JFK assassination that is really worth seeing).

Other than that; fun action scenes, great soundtrack, sexy female lead, and... well, it was good if you're in the mood for a movie where those are the only noted highlights.
Cover your cough!

The Watchmen2009

Structure and Plot
Alright, before I begin this little adventure of a review, I have to say that I saw this movie a few days after it's release in a packed theatre on free popcorn Tuesday! I had no idea what I was in for, I heard of the hype and I watched a few trailers, so I think I had a small idea of what to expect. The story starts with the brutal murder of a brutish antihero called "The Comedian," then quickly turns into a paranoid thriller as a crazed vigilante, Rorschach, searches for the killer and uncovers an apocalyptic plot. He's played by Jackie Earle Haley. The film leaps back and forth in time and space -- one dreamy interlude takes place on Mars -- but the action is set mainly in the parallel universe of a 1980s America where the Cold War has reached the boiling point, the doomsday clock is approaching midnight and formerly prominent superheroes have woven themselves into the warp and woof -- especially the warp, given their foibles -- of everyday life. Personally, at the end of the movie I had to ask: What just happened?

Characterization
I won’t bore you and go into all the characters and what they did, and how they did it, but I will tell you I was blown away by the character of Rorschach- played by Jackie Earle Haley. For me personally he absolutely stole the movie. Dr. Manhattan bored me to death, and I was sick of seeing his ***** to be honest with you, it was like being in a local pool and all the old men showering. Malin Akerman is super sexy and some might think she was one of the downfalls of the movie, I thought she did an alright job, but hot ****, give me ten minutes with her! Everyone else did a subpar performance, no one really stood out. I would have loved to see more from the Comedian though.

Dialogue
Again, I didn’t know what to expect, but from what I hear they tried to make this movie as close to the comics as possible. Did they achieve this with the dialogue, I’m not sure. I’m on the fence about this one. I thought what was being said was interesting. There were times I was thinking we were being treated to some good lines from Rorschach.

Scenes
I think this was one of the films weaker points. I often felt confused with what was going on. I would sit there and wonder where are we going with this? Why did we have to see that? I understood the concept of what they had to do to “save the worldâ€Â

Good reviews so far. I just have one question for you. You said that the visual presentation in the Watchmen was top notch CGI with great cinematography. Yet you only gave it a 6 out of 10?????

I haven't seen the movie because I didn't fall for the hype/never read the comics. The trailer looked like a CGI monstrosity (with no plot or character development) which have become all to commonplace in movies now (Matrix, Pirates, Transformers etc.)

I still want to check it out because of all the hype but with lowered expectations. I just don't know if I can stomach 3 hours of this........

Deadly Prey: It's basically about a man named Mike Danton

Wasn't Mike Danton the hockey player accused of trying to get his agent killed?

thanks kirk for that Undefeatable clip!! That had to have been one of the best so called Knife fights ever! From the opening blade licking to the final eye gouge crane lift and final works from the heros, that was sheer brilliance :lol:

jeez, the internet's creepy in some ways.

start a thread about movies on a pretty small website like this one, and one day later there's an ad for a film school.

Yeah, but it's Vancouver Film School. How else they gonna get folks to pay them $15K for something they can learn from a book?
