As we nervously follow the Jets' quest for a playoff berth, we should pause to reflect upon junior hockey. The playoffs start this week in both the MJHL and the MMJHL. That means there is affordable hockey entertainment near YOU! So, COME ON DOWN!

Image [Standings]

The MMJHL is a 10 team league, and the top 8 qualify for the playoffs. Fort Garry was a distant last, and St. James faded so that there was little doubt as to the playoff entrants. For the quarter-finals the teams are seeded 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, and 4-5 and the winners are re-seeded for the semi-finals. All series are best-of-7 all the way through. The schedule is usually Tuesday-Friday-Sunday but some teams have different nights based on arena availability.

Here is how the series started:

Tuesday, March 3rd

TRANSCONA RAILER EXPRESS 3
ST. BONIFACE RIELS 6

(St. Boniface leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

ST. VITAL VICTORIAS 6
CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 3

(St. Vital leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

Wednesday, March 4th

RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 4
PEMBINA VALLEY TWISTERS 2

(River East leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

STONEWALL JETS 3
RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 1

(Stonewall leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

Thursday, March 5th
Image Image
CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 2
ST. VITAL VICTORIAS 1

(series tied 1-1)
:. [Summary]

The first thing to notice is that 3 of the 4 underdogs started with victories. This is most unusual in the MMJHL.

The 1-8 series is often a blowout. This year it is rematch from last year's quarter-final. The Stonewall Jets knocked off the defending champion Raiders JHC. Hunter Ploszay stopped 43 of 44 shots to steal one for the Jets.

The 2-7 series was the only one to hold to form. Even though Transcona lost, at least they are back in the playoffs. And, they held a 3-2 lead in the 2nd period. Not so long ago the franchise folded. If they could come back to beat St. B. there will no doubt be pink flamingos adorning front yards throughout Trashcona!

The 3-6 series was one where the underdog was thought to put up a fight. And River East have made good on that forecast after one game. This would be a fairly big upset, though The Twisters were 14 points ahead during the season.

The 4-5 series is usually the closest. And it is 1-1. The Hawks and Vics had some tremendous cup finals a few years back. After missing the playoffs a year ago, the Vics are back. The Hawks can still be a thorn in the side of the top three contenders.

UPCOMING GAMES

Friday, March 6th
Raiders at Stonewall - 7:30 Veterans Memorial
Pembina Valley at River East - 7:30 Terry Sawchuk Arena
St. Boniface at Transcona - 8:00 Ed Golding (East End) Arena

Sunday, March 8th
River East at Pembina Valley - 4:00 Morris Rec. Complex
Stonewall at Raiders - 7:30 Billy Mosienko Arena
St. Vital at Charleswood - 7:30 Eric Coy Arena
Transcona at St. Boniface - 7:30 Southdale CC

Image [Standings] : [Playoff Schedule]

The MJHL has 11 teams and for the 2nd year now, only one is eliminated from the playoffs. However, only the top 6 qualify for the quarter-finals. The 7th to 10th place teams play a best-of-3 "Survivor Series". The two winners then join the field for the quarter-finals. The Neepawa Natives were the team eliminated. There are no longer any divisions.

The Portage Derrieres dominated the league and are expected to dominate the playoffs. They host the RBC Cup and have stacked their team.

Thursday, March 5th

OCN BLIZZARD 2
SELKIRK STEELERS 7

(Selkirk leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

Image Image
DAUPHIN KINGS 2
WAYWAY WOLVERINES 3

(Wayway leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

Selkirk had a disappointment a year ago so maybe they can make up for it this year. Dauphin has really fallen the year after hosting the Westerns, as expected. It would be nice to see Wayway get some glory. But if Selkirk wins, the winner of this one gets Portage.

UPCOMING GAMES

Saturday, March 7th
Waywayseecappo at Dauphin 7:00
Selkirk at OCN 7:00

Sunday, March 8th
OCN at Selkirk 7:30 (if necessary)
Dauphin at Waywayseecappo 7:30 (if necessary)

Wednesday, March 11th
Swan Valley at Winnipeg Blues 7:30 at MTS Iceplex
Virden at Winkler 7:30

Note: Schedules for the Portage and Steinbach series are TBA, pending the outcome of the Survivor Series.

I also like to follow the MJHL on radio during the playoffs. Here are the on-line links:
Selkirk: [Mike FM Online]
Steinbach: [AM1250]
Portage: [CFRY 920 AM 93.1 FM]
Dauphin: [CKDM 730 AM]
Virden: [Big FM]
Swan Valley: [GX94 940 am]
OCN: [CJ-1240 AM]

Note that not all of those stations carry all games. So it is best to check.

:. [Summary]

I must confess that I am not a big fan of the MJHL's addition of this "Survivor Series". Although, it makes teams push for a top 6 placing so as to avoid this round. In any event, tonight's results ended this round quickly and painlessly. Former powers like OCN and Dauphin getting tossed so early seems kind of strange. But based on the yearly standings it was appropriate.

In the next round, Wayway will face the heavily favoured Portage Derrieres and Selkirk will tangle with Steinbach.

UPCOMING GAMES

Wednesday, March 11th
Swan Valley at Blues - 7:30 (MTS Iceplex)
Virden at Winkler - 7:30

Friday, March 13th

STONEWALL JETS 3
RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 1

(Stonewall leads series 2-1)
:. [Summary]

The home team has yet to win a game in this series. This is a 1-8 matchup, and I do not recall an underdog ever winning this series in the MMJHL. The shots were 43-21 in favour of the Raiders.

Image Image
TRANSCONA RAILER EXPRESS 1
ST. BONIFACE RIELS 7

(St. Boniface leads series 3-0)
:. [Summary]

Transcona's return to the playoffs looks like it won't last long. This was very one-sided. St. B. had 20 shots and 3 goals in the first period.

Image Image
RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 4
PEMBINA VALLEY TWISTERS 3

(in overtime)
(River East leads series 3-0)

:. [Summary]

This was a tight game all the way through. It would be a shock if River East could sweep the Twisters. The Twisters have been a contender in recent years and this has kind of come out of nowhere. I would say most pundits would have had this pegged as a long series in favour of the Twisters.

Image Image
ST. VITAL VICTORIAS 3
CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 2

(in overtime)
(St. Vital leads series 2-1)

:. [Summary]

This series is living up to the expectations. The stats were even as possible. Expect a 6 or 7 game series. Oddly, the Hawks tied the game at 1-1 with a shorthanded goal in the 2nd period and the Vics tied it at 2-2 in the 3rd period, also on a shorthanded goal.

UPCOMING GAMES

Tuesday, March 10th
Raiders at Stonewall - 7:30 Veterans Memorial
St. Boniface at Transcona - 7:30 Ed Golding (East End) Arena

RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 4
STONEWALL JETS 3

(series tied 2-2)
:. [Summary]

I repeat: the home team has yet to win a game in this series. This series is looking like a toss-up. The shots were almost even and it was a last-minute goal which decided it.

Image Image
ST. BONIFACE RIELS 2
TRANSCONA RAILER EXPRESS 1

(St. Boniface wins series 4-0)
:. [Summary]

Transcona went down with a pretty good fight at least. St. Boniface is the ony series favourite with a lead in or win of their series.

Image Image
PEMBINA VALLEY TWISTERS 1
RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 3

(River East wins series 4-0)
:. [Summary]

This sweep is a shocker. River East is a decent enough team. But to sweep a contenderlikethe Twisters is a surprise.

Image Image
CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 3
ST. VITAL VICTORIAS 4

(St. Vital leads series 3-1)
:. [Summary]

Once again these teams produced a very tight game. St. Vital was either tied or trailing all game until they scored twice the 3rd period to take the lead.

VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 3

(Virden leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Winkler] : [Virden]

The openers all went to the favourites playing at home, except for the mild upset by Virden in the 4-5 series. I suspect that all series will be long ones except for the Derrieres, who should finish Wayway in 4 or 5 games.

Both Selkirk and Swan Valley had 2-0 leads in the 1st period before losing their games.

If you want to get tickets in Steinbach I would suggest you buy in advance. Their arena is small and they had close to 1,000 on a Wednesday night.

STONEWALL JETS 1
RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 8

(Raiders lead series 3-2)
:. [Summary]

The home team finally won one, and in emphatic fashion. Stonewall had to use their backup goaltender. The game went off the rails in the 2nd period when the RJHC scored 5 goals on 11 shots.

Image Image
ST. VITAL VICTORIAS 3
CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 4

(St. Vital leads series 3-2)
:. [Summary]

Trailing the game 3-1, the Hawks scored in the final minute of the 2nd and again in the first minute of the 3rd to tie it. Then another marker mid-way through the 3rd forced the series to go another game, at least.

UPCOMING GAMES

Sunday, March 15th
Raiders at Stonewall - 7:30 Veterans Memorial

PORTAGE TERRIERS 9
WAYWAY WOLVERINES 0

:. [Summary]
:. [Portage] : [Wayway]

Now would be a good time for Wayway to celebrate the fact that at least they won a series for the first time in their history when they beat Dauphin in the Survivor Series. The Dogs will be movin' on.

Image Image
STEINBACH PISTONS 4
SELKIRK STEELERS 3

(Steinbach leads series 2-0)

Two games, two one-goal wins for Car Town. Somewhere Stan Kubicek is dancing in the streets.

Image Image
WINNIPEG BLUES 3
SWAN VALLEY STAMPEDERS 1

(Winnipeg leads series 2-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Blues] : [Swan Valley]

Another close win for the Blues. I really want to see some MJHL playoffs so a win for the Blues makes that much more likely.

Image Image
WINKLER FLYERS 4
VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 3

(in overtime)
(series tied 1-1)

:. [Summary]
:. [Winkler] : [Virden]

This is the 4-5 matchup and therefore should be a tough, long series. So far the away team has won both games. Virden had over 1,000 fans for the game.

UPCOMING GAMES

RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 3
STONEWALL JETS 2

(Raiders win series 4-2)
:. [Summary]

The upstart Jets made this series a close one. They were down 3-1 going into the 3rd period. They outshot the Raiders 18-4 in the 3rd period but could only score once. So the Raiders are off to the semi-finals where they will be the #1 seed and will face the River East Royal Knights.

Image Image
CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 6
ST. VITAL VICTORIAS 3

(series tied 3-3)
:. [Summary]

It makes sense that this series will be headed to game 7. For the MMJHL the shots were very low, only 20-19 for the Vics. Each team now has a 6-2 win and two wins by one goal. Game 7 goes Tuesday, but I have tickets to Jets-Sharks. The winner will face the St. Boniface Riels in the semi-finals.

WAYWAY WOLVERINES 0
PORTAGE TERRIERS 8

(Portage leads series 3-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Portage] : [Wayway]

This might be the most one-sided series in MJHL history. At least since the league had 3 teams eliminated at this stage.

Image Image
SELKIRK STEELERS 0
STEINBACH PISTONS 4

(Steinbach leads series 3-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Steinbach] : [Selkirk]

Steinbach blew things open with this big win before another large crowd in Steinbach. If they advance and play the Blues in the semi-finals it will be tough to find good seats for that series.

Image Image
SWAN VALLEY STAMPEDERS 3
WINNIPEG BLUES 5

(Winnipeg leads series 3-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Blues] : [Swan Valley]

An empty-netter put this one away for the Blues. Although they lead the series 3-0, these games have been very hotly contested.

Image Image
VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 1
WINKLER FLYERS 2

(in overtime)
(Winkler leads series 2-1)

:. [Summary]
:. [Winkler] : [Virden]

The Battle of the South is turning into a proverbial barn-burner. I suspected a long series and that looks very likely. Any chance of a game being decided in regulation?

STEINBACH PISTONS 4
SELKIRK STEELERS 2

(Steinbach wins series 4-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Steinbach] : [Selkirk]

That the Pistons won this series is no shock. That they swept it is. The Steelers are in a rebuilding year but I thought they would put up a better fight.

Image Image
WINNIPEG BLUES 7
SWAN VALLEY STAMPEDERS 3

(Winnipeg wins series 4-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Blues] : [Swan Valley]

The Stamps did not go down as meekly as the socre would indicate. In the 1st period they outshot the Blues 15-8, yet trailed 3-1. On the night they outshot the Blues 35-26. How often does a team lose 7-3 yet sweep the 3 star selections? Well, it happened in Swan!

Image Image
WINKLER FLYERS 3
VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 4

(in overtime)
(series tied 2-2)

:. [Summary]
:. [Winkler] : [Virden]

Another overtime game. The winner of this series will be severely battered for the likely task of meeting the Portage Terriers in the semi-finals. They have dominated Wayway and one has to assume that they will advance. If they do they will face the winner of this series, whilst Steinbach would face the Blues in the other series.

UPCOMING GAMES

PORTAGE TERRIERS 7
WAYWAY WOLVERINES 0

(Portage wins series 4-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Portage] : [Wayway]

This game was played on Wednesday night. Mercifully, this series has ended. The Derrieres are a cut above the league, and clearly several cuts above Wayway. Still, Wayway won a round of playoffs, even if just the Survivor Series.

Image Image
VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 4
WINKLER FLYERS 2

(Virden leads series 3-2)
:. [Summary]
:. [Winkler] : [Virden]

As one-sided as the Portage win was, this series has been the opposite. Virden's 2-goal win here, the last one an empty-netter, is the most decisive game so far. There was an onslaught of shots, 46-44 in favour of the Flyers.

CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 3
ST. BONIFACE RIELS 2

(Charleswood leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

I attended this game. It was my first time in the new west sheet at Southdale CC. It has an elevated seating area, somewhat like Gateway. At any rate, it was a nice view of the game. It was a fast-paced game with just 5 minor penalties. The Hawks did manage to carry the play, but for a stage at the start of the 1st and a stint of about 12 minutes in the 2nd.

Image Image
RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 2
RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 1

(River East leads series 1-0)
:. [Summary]

The Knights have sure gone on an unexpected playoff roll. They swept 3rd place Pembina Valley in the opening round and now have a win over the 1st place Raiders. This is most unusual in the MMJHL. I doubt that the Raiders took anybody lightly, after surviving a scare from Stonewall in the opening round.

UPCOMING GAMES

Raiders at River East - 2:30 Terry Sawchuk Arena
St. Boniface at Charleswood - 7:30 Eric Coy Arena
