WINKLER FLYERS 2
VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 3

(in overtime)
(Virden wins series 4-2)

:. [Summary]
:. [Winkler] : [Virden]

Appropriately enough, this series ended in overtime. The former Saints are marchin' in to the semi-final round where they will face the Portage Derrieres. The schedule for that series is not yet announced. I suspect a Tuesday or Wednesday start. The fans of Virden deserve to see the semi-finals. They had 1,244 fans at this game. I suspect that Portage will be too tough a task for them. Virden was a respectable 30-20-10 and Portage was 53-3-4.

UPCOMING GAMES

Wednesday, March 25th
Blues at Steinbach - 7:30

Friday, March 27th
Steinbach at Blues - 7:30 at Iceplex

Virden-Portage series is TBA

ST. BONIFACE RIELS 1
CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 2

(in overtime)
(Charleswood leads series 2-0)

:. [Summary]

After finishing 4th in the regular season and then falling behind 3-1 in the quarter-finals, not many would have looked at the Hawks as a potential finalist. But with a 2-0 lead over the Riels, they look like a pretty good bet. The Hawks dominated the shot clock by a 44-28 margin.

RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 4
RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 1

(series tied 1-1)
:. [Summary]

After being down 1-0, the Raiders needed a win on the road. They shut down the Knights, holding them to 15 shots in the game. Now the question is whether the Knights can regain their mojo after their 5 game winning streak. There were 12 power plays in this game, in contrast to only 4 in the southern series.

PORTAGE TERRIERS 53-3-4 110 (1st)
VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 30-20-10 70 (5th)

Team sites: [Portage] : [Virden]
Radio: [CFRY 920 AM 93.1 FM (Portage)] : [Big FM]
Schedule: [MJHL Press Release]

The imbedded playoff schedule at the MJHL site is not yet updated to include this series. However the whole schedule is at the MJHL Press Release link. The series opens in conjunction with the other in that they will play at Portage on Wednesday and at Virden on Friday. Both games go at 7:30 p.m.

Portage is the heavy favourite. They are the #1 ranked team in the country, out of 129 teams. The only thing against them is that as the host team for the nationals they may lack the urgency needed to win a provincial title.

I doubt that you'll have an easy time getting tickets in Virden. The team is still a novelty and they have a new rink. The place has been packed so far. I imagine that a good number will travel to Portage as well.

STEINBACH PISTONS 39-14-7 85 (2nd)
WINNIPEG BLUES 38-15-7 83 (3rd)

Team Sites: [Steinbach] : [Blues]
Radio: [AM1250 (Steinbach)]
Schedule: [MJHL Press Release]

Steinbach is also a comparatively new team, having moved from Beausejour. Their old rink is jammed as well. Apparently, a new arena is in the works. They have fair number of Winnipeg lads on the team and when they travel to the Iceplex excpect a lot of their fans to travel.

This series is a toss-up. Both teams had solid seasons and swept their quarter-finals. Expect a long series and some overtime as well.

CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 0
ST. BONIFACE RIELS 3

(Charleswood leads series 2-1)
:. [Summary]

Trailing the series 2-0, the Riels had to win game 3 on home ice. So they came out hard in the first period, outscoring the Hawks 3-0. They then hung on for the win through two scoreless periods.

RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 2
RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 3

(River East leads series 2-1)
:. [Summary]

This must have been a great game to watch. The winning goal was scored with just 20 seconds left in the game. It was the first time the Raiders led at any point in the game, even though they outshot the Knights 41-24.

VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 0
PORTAGE TERRIERS 1

:. [Summary]
:. [Portage] : [Virden]

1-0 junior hockey is a rarity. This was a tight game throughout. The shots were just 27-21, in favour of the Derrieres. The Greasy Ones will not be a pushover. Now let's see how Portage can handle a yougher opponent.

WINNIPEG BLUES 3
STEINBACH PISTONS 2

:. [Summary]
:. [Steinbach] : [Blues]

I don't know what to expect in this series, except for a lot of close games, Game 1 fit the bill. Although the Blues got off to a 2-0 lead, the score was tied going into the third. The Pistons outshot the Blues 35-27 on the night.

UPCOMING GAMES

Friday, March 27th
Portage at Virden - 7:30
Steinbach at Blues - 7:30 at Iceplex

Sunday, March 29th

CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 2
ST. BONIFACE RIELS 3

(in overtime)
(series tied 2-2)

:. [Summary]

Charleswood built a 2-0 lead early in the 2nd period, only to see St. Boniface tie it late that same period. There was no scoring in the 3rd period, setting the stage for an overtime game. Each side now has one OT win and one regulation time win. The battle for supremacy in the south side looks destined to go the limit. After a 7-game series with St. Vital, the Hawks may be feeling the effects a bit more that St. B. at this stage.

RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 2
RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 3

(in overtime)
(series tied 2-2)

:. [Summary]

Not to be outdone by the southerners, the cream of the northern crop also went to overtime and the series is also now level.

The Royal Knights have really upset the form chart, and this is shocking for the MMJHL. They were 6th in the season, and knocked off #3 Pembina Valley already. The Raiders are #1 and are probably a strong favourite.

PORTAGE TERRIERS 4
VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 0

(Portage leads series 2-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Portage] : [Virden]

The fans in Virden came out in droves (1,342) to see what they hoped would be a major upset. Instead, the home side was shut-out yet again. The Caps were expected to make Portage work, but not many gave them a chance at actually winning the series. And that's how this is panning out. Portage built a 2-0 lead in the 1st period and then locked down Virden. Still, the shots were even (30-30) and the final goal was an empty-netter.

STEINBACH PISTONS 2
WINNIPEG BLUES 1

(in overtime)
(series tied 1-1)

:. [Summary]
:. [Steinbach] : [Blues]

Everybody and his dog was expecting this series to be close, and that is what it has been. The game was tied 1-1 after the 1st and that was it for scoring until OT. Oddly, the Blues outshot the Pistons 10-2 in a scoreless 2nd period. The overtime winner was scored on a powerplay.

UPCOMING GAMES

Sunday, March 29th
Virden at Portage - 6:30
Blues at Steinbach - 7:30

Tuesday, March 31st

CHARLESWOOD HAWKS 1
ST. BONIFACE RIELS 2

(St. Boniface leads series 3-2)
:. [Summary]

St. B took a 2-0 lead in the 1st and then hung on for the victory. Charleswood's lament would be the lost opportunity on PP, as they went 1-for-7 whilst St. B went 0-for-2. After falling behind 2 games to 0, the Riels now enjoy their first lead in the series.

RIVER EAST ROYAL KNIGHTS 2
RAIDERS JUNIOR H.C. 5

(RJHC leads series 3-2)
:. [Summary]

The 1st period of this game was scoreless but nit uneventful. With 21 seconds left an altercation of some sort took place which gave the Raiders 2 & 10 and the Knights 9 and a game. I'd like to see a report on that incident.

UPCOMING GAMES

Tuesday, March 31st
Raiders at River East - 7:30 Terry Sawchuk Arena
St. Boniface at Charleswood - 7:30 Eric Coy Arena

Thursday, April 2nd

VIRDEN OIL CAPITALS 2
PORTAGE TERRIERS 4

(Portage leads series 3-0)
:. [Summary]
:. [Portage] : [Virden]

The Caps are putting up a fight, but a Terrier victory seems inevitable. The Dogs had a big edge in the stats (34-18 in shots), but it was a 3-2 game until a last minute empty-netter put this one away. At this point, staving off elimination on home ice would be a valid goal for the Caps.

WINNIPEG BLUES 1
STEINBACH PISTONS 2

(in overtime)
(Steinbach leads series 2-1)

:. [Summary]
:. [Steinbach] : [Blues]

Game 3 was a clone of game 2. Same score, same overtime, same powerplay winning goal. The looming question appears to be whether the winner of this series will be in any shape to face the Derrieres in the final.

UPCOMING GAMES

Tuesday, March 31st
Portage at Virden - 7:30

Wednesday, April 1st
Steinbach at Blues - 7:30 at Iceplex

Thursday, April 2nd
Virden at Portage - 7:30 (if necessary)
Blues at Steinbach - 7:30
