(in overtime)
(Steinbach leads series 3-1.)

The Blues threw everything they had at Steinbach but this is not looking like their year. Heading into the 3rd period Steinbach led 1-0 and then played a dangerous hide-in-a-shell game in the final frame. The Blues outshot them 11-3 yet it took them almost 18 minutes to tie the game. And to think, when the Showcase Series was on at Thanksgiving, Steinbach looked like the weakest team in the league.

Dauphin Kings 2
OCN Blizzard 5

OCN was too good to be swept, so this stave-off-elimination game on home ice made sense. I doubt they are good enough to win 3 straight (including twice in Dauphin) but we'll see.

River East Royal Knights 3
Charleswood Hawks 4

(Charleswood wins series 4-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

I ventured out to the Terry Sawchuk Arena in EK to see the final game in the Knights' season in 2012-13. They put up a good fight and looked to be a much-improved team. It was a last-minute decision, made once the Jets were down 3-0. So I missed the 1st period, arriving with the score already tied at 1-1. The Knights scored the only goal of the 2nd period, and I thought they carried the play and had the better scoring chances in the period.

However, right at the end of the period they took a penalty for a punch made during a scrum for the puck. The Hawks scored on the ensuing PP early in the 3rd and then carried the momentum for the bulk of the period.

In the games only real moment of controversy the Hawks scored to make it 4-2 in a play where the Knights' goaltender had been knocked down. The goaltender retaliated with a slash to the offending player after the whistle. So instead of being down 3-2 with a PP, the Knights found themselves down 4-2 and on the PK. The Knights later cashed in on their own PP to make it tight. The last minute desperation bid fell short, and Charleswood had their sweep.

The Raiders and Twisters did not play. The Hawks may have a long wait for the final series to start. My guess is Tuesday, April 9th. Will they be rested or rusted?

This one was level at 3-3 entering the 3rd period. The Blues scored on both of their shots on the 3rd period to take the win. This series has been funny that way. They also had over 1,200 fans at the game. Make sure you arrive early for any future games.

My view was that once Dauphin got back into their home digs they would get some homemade perogies and kolbassa and put OCN out of their misery. Well, Dauphin held a 2-1 lead entering the 3rd period and it appeared that the plan was unfolding. Then OCN scored 25 seconds into the 3rd and Garick Gray notched two more within 16 seconds after the 18 minute mark and, all of a sudden, this series is headed back to The Pas.

Wow, another decisive win for the Twisters. I am quite surprised at how they are rolling over the Raiders. This game was only 1-0 until mid-way through the 3rd period, at which time the Twisters exploded. I wouldn't count the Raiders out just yet. But coming back will be tough.

The fans of Steinbach must be going crazy since their team is off to where they have never gone before, to the Turnbull Cup championship series. While most pundits gave them a chance, it is also fair to say that the Blues were fairly heavy favourites. Steinbach scored after 14 seconds and then dominated the rest of the 1st period to take a 3-0 lead. The Blues then tried in vain to make a comeback, outshooting Steinbach 24-9 over the last two periods. No word on when the final will begin.

Holy crap, Dauphin may be en route to one of the biggest chokes in recent MJHL history. They not only led 3-0, they looked to be the dominant team in the MJHL. A team one could see making the RBC Cup. Now? They seem to be far from a prime provincial rep. Like Steinbach, OCN dominated the 1st period, only with a 2-0 lead. Dauphin came back to outshoot OCN 32-11 over the final two periods, but no luck. The Dauphin fans maybe took this one for granted. They have had decent but not overwhelming crowds. Maybe the D-CUP will be overflowing for game 7.

This series was due for an OT game. The teams played offensive hockey in the 1st period. It was 3-2 for PV and they also led 17-16 in shots. Then things tightened up. Looks like Charleswood won't be playing until next Tuesday.

Dauphin finally laid claim to their 4th win of the series, and it took them their 4th attempt. I listened to a lot of the game on-line and the OCN fans seemed to have fun throwing stuff on the ice. Not sure why, it seemed like Dauphin had a big edge in the play. The Kings outshot OCN 20-5 in the 1st and 14-9 in the 2nd, yet the game was tied 2-2. There was also a crowd of almost 2,000 at the D-CUP.

On radio the Dauphin brass were not sure if the final will be 2-2-1-1-1 due to the travel distance between the finalists. I strongly suspect that the series, in whatever format, will begin with two games this coming weekend.

It has been a busy week in Hollywoodland, so here comes an omnibus recap of the series so far.

April 6, 2013

Steinbach Pistons 2
Dauphin Kings 5

(Dauphin lead series 1-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

The stats showed this to be a fairly even game. It was 2-2 after two periods. Dauphin scored two quickies in the 3rd and then salted it away with an empty-netter.

April 8, 2013

Dauphin Kings 1
Steinbach Pistons 4

(Series tied 1-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

Steinbach jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st period, as they have done before these playoffs. Afterwards the teams were pretty even but it was all Steinbach needed to level the series.

April 10, 2013

Steinbach Pistons 2
Dauphin Kings 5

(Dauphin lead series 2-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

Two games at the D-CUP and two identical scorelines. But in this one Dauphin dominated the play. The Kings outshot them 24-6 in the 1st period and built a 2-0 lead. And that was enough of a cushion.

April 13, 2013

Dauphin Kings 3
Steinbach Pistons 4

(in overtime)
(Series tied 2-2.)

|> [Boxscore]

This overtime game was the tightest of the series so far. Steinbach scored just over a minute inside the OT and now it is anybody's series. A win for Dauphin and I would have put down money this would be over in 5. But now?

April 7, 2013

Pembina Valley Twisters 0
Charleswood Hawks 4

(Charleswood leads series 1-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

It only took the Hawks 57 seconds to take the lead in this one. They were just ahead of the Twisters in scores and stats all night en route to their 9th straight victory in this year's playoffs.

April 12, 2013

Charleswood Hawks 4
Pembina Valley Twisters 5

(in overtime)
(Series tied 1-1.)

|> [Boxscore]

Charleswood built up a 2-0 lead yet had to fight back with two late 3rd period goals to force OT. It is odd that there was such a gap between games 1 and 2, but from the last round it seems there remain arena issues out in Morris.
