The MMJHL quarter-finals started in all series on Tuesday night and there were two upsets. This is a year where the favourites are heavy favourites so the upsets are, in a way, good news.

Image Image
St. Vital Victorias 2
Charleswood Hawks 5

(Charleswood leads series 1-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

It seems the Hawks always win this league. They have won the championship:
- the last 4 years
- 7 of the last 8 years
- 9 of the last 11 years
- 13 of the past 19 years

Image Image
River East Royal Knights 6
Fort Garry-Fort Rouge Twins 2

(River East leads series 1-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

Here is your first upset of the night. The Twins and Raiders were ranked as major threats to Charleswood going into the playoffs, with the Twisters not far behind.

Image Image
St. Boniface Riels 3
Raiders Junior Hockey Club 4

(in overtime)
(RJHC leads series 1-0.)

.: Boxscore :.

The Raiders outshot their guests 54-15. I will go out on a limb here and say the Riels' goaltender was first star.

Image Image
St. James Canucks 4
Pembina Valley Twisters 2

(St. James leads series 1-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

Here's upset #2 on the night. Usually it is not much of an upset when #5 beats #4. But PV had a 14 point lead over St. James in the regular season. Shots were 42-19 for PV so maybe this was stolen by the goalie.

Two series played Thursday and the other two played Friday.

Here's what happened on Thursday:

Image Image
Charleswood Hawks 4
St. Vital Victorias 3

(Charleswood leads series 2-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

St. Vital plays pretty good hockey. To me, they look better than 8th in the league (albeit very close to 5th). It seems likely that they will always be outplayed, but maybe they can eek out a win in the series.

Image Image
Pembina Valley Twisters 2
St. James Canucks 1

(Series tied 1-1.)
.: Boxscore :.

PV once again outshot St. James by a wide margin (42-21) yet this was one tight battle. Too bad it wasn't on Friday because maybe I could have attended.

And, on Friday night:

Image Image
Fort Garry-Fort Rouge Twins 6
River East Royal Knights 1

(Series tied 1-1.)
.: Boxscore :.

The #3 seed was not about to go down 0-2 and came back with a vengeance. River East still had 36 shots on goal, so maybe this was not the whippin' it might appear.

Image Image
Raiders Junior Hockey Club 9
St. Boniface Riels 0

(RJHC leads series 2-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

There are no stats or summary posted yet, but I am sure the link will be operating any time now. After game 1 went to OT this one-sided turn-around might not have been expected. I was impressed with the Raiders this year. I saw them lose 1-0 to Charleswood earlier this year and that was quite a hockey game.

Next up:

Sunday - March 10, 2013
St. Vital at Charleswood (7:30 - Eric Coy Arena)
St. Boniface at Raiders (7:30 - Billy Mosienko Arena)
River East at Ft.Garry/Ft.Rouge (7:30 - Century Arena)
St. James at Pembina Valley (8:00 - Morris Rec. Complex)

Tuesday - March 12, 2013
Charleswood at St. Vital (7:30 - St. Vital Centennial Arena)
Raiders at St. Boniface (7:30 - Southdale Community Center)
Ft.Garry/Ft.Rouge at River East (7:30 - Terry Sawchuk Arena)
Pembina Valley at St. James (7:30 - St. James Civic Centre)

Three of the four opening round series hit the ice on Friday night, and here's the skinny:

Image Image
Winkler Flyers 1
Winnipeg Blues 4

(Winnipeg leads series 1-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

The Blues took the series opener in convincing fashion. They outshot the upstart Flyers through two periods 33-9 and held a 4-0 lead. The 3rd period appears to have been uneventful. Could the Flyers be just happy to be here after surging past Selkirk at the end of the season? The series shifts to Winkler on Sunday and then back at the Iceplex on Wednesday.

Image Image
Portage Terriers 0
Steinbach Pistons 3

(Steinbach leads series 1-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

Steinbach hosted a Junior A playoff game on Friday night. And that is something that has not happened in a long time. So, the town must be abuzz over their win over the defending champs. I looked it up and the dearly departed Steinbach Hawks made the playoffs in 1986-87. They made the playoffs because 8 of 9 made it, and the Kildonan North Stars went 0-48-0. I believe that in two playoff appearances the Hawks lost 4-0 to Winkler in 1985-86 and 4-0 to St. Boniface (now Virden) in 1986-87. I don't believe that Steinbach had another Junior A team, so Friday's win is a first! And over 1,000 fans were there to see it.

The series continues Sunday in Portage and then returns to Steinbach on Wednesday.

Image Image
Waywayseekappo Wolverines 2
Dauphin Kings 3

(Dauphin leads series 1-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

The Perogy Boys wre the hottest thing in Manitoba to end the season. So the tght battle they had with Wayway should show them that the playoffs are indeed a whole new season. The teams go Sunday in Wayway and Tuesday back at the D-CUP.

Swan Valley Stampeders 1
OCN Blizzard 2

(OCN leads series 1-0.)
.: Boxscore :.

This is, on paper, the best opening round match-up. The two teams could go all the way. All scoring was in the opening period.

Image Image
St. Vital Victorias 1
Charleswood Hawks 8

(Charleswood leads series 3-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

This appears to be a situation where "disheartened team syndrome" finally clicked in for St. Vital. The Hawks scored early and often, posting a 5-0 lead in the 1st period. I am not scheduling myself for attendance at game 5 on Friday.

Image Image
St. Boniface Riels 2
Raiders Junior Hockey Club 3

(in overtime)
(RJHC leads series 3-0.)

|> [Boxscore]

The Raiders have won both overtime games, and this one should prove to be the killer. Not often an underdog comes back from down 0-3. Once again, the Raiders dominated the shot clock (54-15) leading me to believe that Riel goaltender Kyle Vandemosselaer was the star of the game.

Image Image
River East Royal Knights 4
Fort Garry-Fort Rouge Twins 3

(in overtime)
(River East leads series 2-1.)

|> [Boxscore]

A first round without an upset is kind of ... meh. The Knights could be the team to provide a first round spark. The Twins are a bona fide contender so this would be a surprise.

Image Image
St. James Canucks 1
Pembina Valley Twisters 5

(PV leads series 2-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

This one wasn't blown open until the Twisters touched down for 3 goals in the 3rd period.

Sunday was overtime night in the three series that saw action.

Image Image
Winnipeg Blues 1
Winkler Flyers 0

(in overtime)
(Winnipeg leads series 2-0.)

|> [Boxscore]

What can you say about a 1-0 overtime game? Jake Heisinger scored the winner after 1:16.

Image Image
Steinbach Pistons 3
Portage Terriers 2

(in overtime)
(Steinbach leads series 2-0.)

|> [Boxscore]

Steinbach dominated the first period, outshooting Portage 17-5 and taking a 2-0 lead. But the Terrier is a scrappy little dog. They held the edge the rest of the night and scored once in each period, tying the game in the last minute. It then took nearly two full periods of OT to decide the game.

Image Image
Dauphin Kings 2
Waywayseekappo Wolverines 3

(in overtime)
(Series tied 1-1.)

|> [Boxscore]

I was waiting to get a final score on this one for a while. It took almost 13 minutes into the 3rd period of OT to decide the series. Dauphin outshot Wayway 51-25 on the night, and 17-5 in OT.

OCN Blizzard 3

(OCN leads series 2-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

Justin McDonald (OCN goaltender) has it going. He stopped 38 of 39 shots, and has given up only two goals in two games. These games have been tightly played so I would not rule out a SV comeback. I must say, though, that I did enjoy watching OCN this season. So if they were to play the Blues in the final, I would be there.

March 12, 2013

Image Image
Waywayseekappo Wolverines 4
Dauphin Kings 3

(Wayway leads series 2-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

While watching the Jets and the WBC I was not listening to this on-line, but was checking for scoring updates. It seemed that Dauphin had a lead they could hold. But two late goals give Wayway a lead in the series. This would be an unexpected upset. Many believe that if Manitoba is to send a team to the RBC it would have to be Dauphin.

Image Image
Charleswood Hawks 3
St. Vital Victorias 2

(Charleswood wins series 4-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

One knew that the Hawks would win this series, and likely in four straight. But it was good to see the Vics go down with a fight. My guess is that the next game at the Eric Coy will be on Friday, March 22.

Image Image
Raiders Junior Hockey Club 4
St. Boniface Riels 1

(RJHC wins series 4-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

The Raiders are a bona fide contender for the title and showed it by sweeping the pesky Riels. The Riels did force two games into OT but were still dominated in each game.

Image Image
Fort Garry-Fort Rouge Twins 3
River East Royal Knights 4

(in overtime)
(River East leads series 3-1.)

|> [Boxscore]

This late result held up my post. This could be the only upset of the quarter-finals. If River East wins then they would play Charleswood in the semi-finals. If FGFR wins then they would play the Raiders. I wouldn't mind seeing River East and their bright purple uniforms. For whatever reason, the schedule-maker has not co-ordinated their schedule with mine the last few seasons.

Image Image
Pembina Valley Twisters 9
St. James Canucks 2

(PV leads series 3-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

PV took a 3-0 lead after the 1st period. The Canucks managed to play it even in the 2nd, but four goals for the Twisters in the 3rd put it away. My money would be on this one ending in 5.

Finally, we have a night where all four MJHL quarter-finals (or division semi-finals, if you prefer) were in action. There are no games scheduled for Thursday night in either league.

Image Image
Winkler Flyers 2
Winnipeg Blues 4

(Winnipeg leads series 3-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

The Flyers led 1-0 after two periods, and the game was tied 1-1 mid-way through the 3rd period. The Blues exploded late to break open a hard fought game.

Image Image
Portage Terriers 6
Steinbach Pistons 4

(Steinbach leads series 2-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

The Derrieres really needed a win to avoid going down 3-0. Steinbach were outshooting Portage 30-18 after two periods, yet trailed 3-1. Two goals early in the 3rd tied it up, and I can only imagine the packed barn in Steinbach getting revved up. But three unanswered goals made the Terriers happier than a room full of fire hydrants.

Image Image
Swan Valley Stampeders 1
OCN Blizzard 5

(OCN leads series 3-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

It looks like yet another season of disappointment for Swan. They will be attempting to stave off elimination on home ice. But coming back from down 0-3 does not seem likely to me.

Image Image
Dauphin Kings 5
Waywayseekappo Wolverines 2

(Series tied 2-2.)
|> [Boxscore]

Dauphin is not about to go down without a fight. They built up a 3-0 lead. Wayway made it close at 3-2 before Dauphin waltzed away with a road win.

River East Royal Knights 1
Fort Garry-Fort Rouge Twins 6

(River East leads series 3-2.)
|> [Boxscore]

It seems like the Twins wanted to emphasize that they are the favourites in this series. This was the kind of one-sided victory they needed to assuage any feelings of doubt in their dressing room. The Twins finished the season 18 points clear of the Knights in the regular season. So two more wins are possible. The fans of River East should be out in full force Sunday night.

Image Image
St. James Canucks 2
Pembina Valley Twisters 7

(PV wins series 4-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

It looks like St. James simply had a token win as PV rallied to win the series with a couple of very one-sided wins.

It can now be made official:

- If River East wins their series then they would play Charleswood and the Raiders would play Pembina Valley.

- If Fort Garry wins their series then they would play the Raiders and Charleswood would play Pembina Valley.

Winnipeg Blues 3
Winkler Flyers 4

(Winnipeg leads series 3-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

The Flyers at least staved off elimination on home ice by posting this victory. It was level at 2-2 entering the 3rd period where the Flyers scored twice. A last minute goal by the Blues padded the scoreline. My hunch is that the Blues should be able to win game 5 Sunday at the Iceplex. Hopefully I will be able to attend that one.

Image Image
Steinbach Pistons 1
Portage Terriers 2

(in overtime)
(Series tied 2-2.)

|> [Boxscore]

The Derrieres have come all the way back to level the series. A few years ago a junior game going into OT tied 1-1 would have been unthinkable. Now the teams are learning to play defence. I doubt that you'd be able to get tickets for game 5 in Steinbach.

Image Image
Waywayseekappo Wolverines 1
Dauphin Kings 7

(Dauphin leads series 3-2.)
|> [Boxscore]

The entire MJHL was no doubt licking their chops awaiting a Wayway upset. Now it looks like Dauphin have taken command and I would be shocked to see them lose. They lead 4-1 going into the 3rd and then outshot Wayway 16-2 in the 3rd period. Now that's asserting dominance.
