OCN Blizzard 1
Swan Valley Stampeders 3

(OCN leads series 3-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

So many teams down 0-3 manage to win game 4 at home before losing game 5 away. While the odds are pretty good of that happening here, one must bear in mind that OCN was 3rd overall with 83 points and Swan was 4th overall with 70 points.

The Twins have now come all the way back to level the series after having trailed 3-1. Now the pressure really shifts to River East. We know that game 7 will go Tuesday. I suspect the semi-finals will begin Friday night but no announcement has been made.

Winkler Flyers 2
Winnipeg Blues 1

(in overtime)
(Winnipeg leads series 3-2.)

|> [Boxscore]

The Blues outshot Winkler 47-17, including 10-2 in OT, yet still lost. The winning goal was also shorthanded. Could it be that Winkler is just finding their form? Those shots numbers would suggest not, but one never knows.

Portage Terriers 0
Steinbach Pistons 3

(Steinbach leads series tied 3-2.)
|> [Boxscore]

Steinbach have now moved close to their first ever series win. This series has been hard fought. This game was 1-0 until late in the 3rd, and the last goal was into an empty net.

Dauphin Kings 6
Waywayseekappo Wolverines 1

(Dauphin wins series 4-2.)

After an early scare Dauphin won this series going away. Bad news for the rest of the MJHL.

OCN Blizzard 4

(in overtime)
(OCN wins series 4-1.)

Even though this one was anybody's game, Swan has to be disappointed with another early exit. Swan also had a 3-1 lead after two periods.

(River East wins series 4-3.)
|> [Boxscore]

River East has pulled off the only upset of the first round of the playoffs. There were three one-goal games in the series, and the Royal Knights won them all. This was a tight battle all the way through. The shots were 38-36 favouring RE, and there was only one minor penalty all night.

The semi-final matchups will therefore be:
#1 Charleswood Hawks v #6 River East Royal Knights
#2 Raiders J.H.C. v #4 Pembina Valley Twisters

Next up:

Friday - March 22, 2013
Pembina Valley at Raiders (7:30 - Billy Mosienko Arena)

Remaining games are TBA. Check league site for scheduling updates.

Winnipeg Blues 1

(Winnipeg wins series 4-2.)

Winkler was coming on in this series so the Blues are likely glad to see it end. This was a tough battle, shots almost even at 36-32 for the Blues and scoreless until less than 7 minutes were left in the game.

The Blues will await the winner of Portage-Steinbach. Dates for the series have not been announced.

The Derrieres' playoff pedigree is not to be under-estimated. The scoreline might be a bit misleading. It was 1-0 after two periods. Portage scored short-handed early in the 3rd and then salted it away with a pair of late goals.

Game 7 in Steinbach is bound to be a big event with the Mennonite diaspora from far and wide no doubt out in full force. They support their teams well in that town, so tickets will be tough to find. Is Stub Hub an option?

Steinbach scored on 5 of their first 12 shots to put this one away early. After two periods Portage was outshooting Steinbach 25-21 yet trailed 7-1. Ugh.

So Steinbach will now face the Blues. I suspect the series may start Friday at the MTS Iceplex. Check the MJHL link on Thursday for confirmation.

In what is considered to be a very close series, the Raiders pulled off a relatively dominating victory. The shots were 50-27. Two players were tossed for a fight with about 2 minutes left.

In a night where one side dominated the shot clock, the Kings kept the string alive. But the periods they dominated did not produce much. Heading into the 3rd period it was 1-1. Then Dauphin scored 3 goals on 8 shots in the 3rd to pull away with a win. There were 1,400 people at the D-CUP to watch this one.

Through two periods Steinbach had outshot the Blues 26-15 and led 4-3 on the scoreboard. Then they went into the ultimate defensive shell. They only had two shots in the 3rd period, yet scored on both. And the last was into an empty net. Brett Brooks had two goals for the Blues and Richard Olson had two for Steinbach.

Dauphin Kings 6
OCN Blizzard 2

(Dauphin lead series 2-0.)

90 seconds into the game the Kings had a 2-0 lead. Their early scare against Wayway is now a distant memory. OCN still threw 44 shots at Jeremy Pominville in the Dauphin goal. One would think that with that sort of pressure they could get back into the series.

Charleswood Hawks 6

(Charleswood leads series 2-0.)
|> [Boxscore]

It would appear that River East had but one upset in them, and used it up on Fort Garry. The Hawks came out guns-a-blazin' and took Game 2 easily. Shots were 18-4 in the 1st period. Though the Knights were only down 2-0, that kind of margin eventually leads to the floodgates opening. Each side had two players tossed for fighting in separate battles, 35 seconds apart, late in the 3rd. There were not an outrageous amount of penalties in the game. Charleswood scored on their only PP and River East was 1-for-5.

Raiders Junior Hockey Club 2
Pembina Valley Twisters 6

(Series tied 1-1.)

Not a surprise that this series is tied. But it is a surprise that both games have been relatively one-sided. Time for an overtime nail-biter! The winner of this series will IMO be a very tough opponent for Charleswood in the final.

This was a marathon. With the Blues down 2-0 they needed this win on home ice. In each of the three periods Steinbach scored first, only for the Blues to tie it up. So the Blues never led until the second overtime period. There was also a large crowd at the Iceplex, well over 1,000. With a big Jets game on TV that is a good number.

Image Image
OCN Blizzard 2
Dauphin Kings 4

(Dauphin lead series 3-0.)

Dauphin jumped on OCN with 3 goals in the 1st period to put this one away early. It is hard to see OCN making a comeback in this one.

(Charleswood leads series 3-0.)

|> [Boxscore]

River East scored with 15 seconds left to force OT. But in the end Charleswood won to take a commanding lead. The shots were 68-25 for Charleswood, so that must have been some goaltending performance by Shaun Gerbinski in the Knights' goal.

Image Image
Pembina Valley Twisters 4
Raiders Junior Hockey Club 2

(Pembina Valey leads series 2-1.)
|> [Boxscore]

This was odd. The Twisters led 4-0 and then the Raiders scored twice in the final minute to make it sound close. I suspected a lengthy series, and that may yet transpire. But where are the OT games? This series should have games tied in the 3rd period, at least.
