MANITOBA BISONS 2011-12

There are, as yet, no official announcements of recruits for the Bisons, nor a schedule. However, there are some solid rumours, along with some announcements from other teams and some off-ice news. So I figure time to start my annual thread. The 2010-11 Thread can also be re-lived for posterity!

The rumoured recruits (linked to their Elite Prospects career stats) are:

Mark Friesen - goal - Swift Current Broncos
- He has 4 years in the WHL. He played two years in Chilliwack and two more in Swift Current. He was the #1 goaltender in Swift last year. With former all-star goaltender Steve Christie gone first to the Texas Brahmas and then Manitoba Moose (as a backup) for their playoff run, the Herd need somebody to fill some big shoes.

Matt Lowry - centre - Elmira Jackals/Binghampton Senators
- He is the only recruit not born in 1990. After two years each with the Medicine Hat Tigers and Brandon Wheat Kings he turned pro for a year and then red-shirted for the Bisons last year to regain his status. He is a highly-touted 2-way player. He peaked at 24 goals in 2008.

Neal Prokop - centre - Tri-City Americans
- He played one game with the Moose Jaw Warriors as a 16 year old in 2005-06 and had five years in the WHL with Moose Jaw, Regina, and Tri-Cities. He only played 27 games last year (10 of those in the playoffs). His peak was 22 goals in 2009-10.

Jordan Davis - forward - Topeka Roadrunners
- He is an Ontario boy and the only non-Manitoban in the recruiting class. He was with the Owen Sound Attack in the OHL in 2007-08 and then went to the Fort William North Stars of the SIJHL for two years before turning to the Topeka Roadrunners of the NAHL last year. He did have 33 goals in 52 games in 2009-10. As usual, it is hard to compare junior "A" stats to major junior stats.

Tyler Schmidt - defence - Tri-Cities Americans
- He has played five seasons for the Tri-Cities Americans and seems to be yet another solid d-man. He managed 11 goals and 42 assists last year.

Travis Bobbee - defence - Seattle Thunderbirds
- Like Prokop, he got a game in 2005-06 and then played five more years in the WHL. He went from the Lethbridge Hurricanes, to the Portland Winterhawks, then Swift Current Bronocs before closing his WHL career in Seattle.

Darren Bestland - defence - Vancouver Giants/Brandon Wheat Kings
- Last year was his 3rd with the Wheaties and he was dealt to Vancouver for the playoff drive. He has the highest PIM totals amongst the new blue-liners.

Image The CWUAA announced that the Mount Royal Cougars will be joining the league in time for the 2012-13 season. They currently play in the ACAC. So an 8 team league will have two teams named "Cougars"! Evan Daum addresses this development at South Campus Sports. He ponders the possibility of dilution. Since MRU already has a hockey team they have been competing for recruits. However, going CIS will no doubt get them more WHL grads in future years. They should be pretty good. They defeated another Calgary school, SAIT Trojans, 3 games to 2 in the ACAC final.

Image The CWUAA also announced that UBC will not be leaving the league for the NCAA. On the recruiting front, the Thunderbirds have announced four players:

Steven Stanford - goaltender - Saskatoon Blades (WHL)
Jason Yee - defenceman - Powell River Kings (BCHL)
Kyle Johnson - forward - Dauphin Kings (MJHL)
Cole Wilson - forward - Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)

They will need a lot more bodies to re-stock their roster this year. The fact they will be staying in the CIS should make that job easier because most of their line-up from 2010-11 was ineligible for the NCAA.

Image The Regina Cougars also have landed seven new recruits, with two being WHL grads. The players are discussed at South Campus Sports and The Regina Leader Post. The players are:

Liam Brennan - Forward - Augustana College (ACAC)
Tyler Henry - Forward - Bonnyville (AJHL)
Troy Hunter - Forward - Estevan (SJHL)
Dayton Fossum – Defence - La Ronge (SJHL)
Mark Schneider - Defence- Regina (WHL)
John Sonntag – Defence - Kindersley (SJHL)
Andrew Hayes - Goalie - Cape Breton (QMJHL)

Both "name" recruits have a Brandon connection. Schneider and Hayes were both once Wheat Kings. Schneider was traded to Regina for the playoff drive and Hayes was not kept on for his overage year.

BTW, since the MRU Cougars will be joining the league, maybe all Regina teams should now be called the "Rams".

Image The Lethbridge Pronghorns announced they have signed Mike Reddington, captain of the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL. Also, the U of L reported a $350,000 donation from Telus. The enigmatic H0rny Ones will also need an infusion of new recruits to be announced.

Image The Evil Monkeys were shocked when their head organ grinder resigned. Eric Thurston Howell III up and quit.

Image The Banjo-Mutts announced that Jeremy Roenick will be the speaker at a fund raiser. Hopefully, he will have the guts to call them out as uncouth hillbilly swine.

Image The Bisons announced seven recruits. Not included from the rumoured list was goaltender Mark Friesen but added was Brendan Rowinski, a centre from the Vancouver Giants and Moose Jaw Warriors. He has had 6 seasons in the WHL and his high-water mark was 30 goals in 2009-10. He was injured for part of last year.

Image SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

Canada West announced all schedules this week, most importantly men's hockey. It is kind of a funny start in that there are two series on each of the first two weekends. To make sense of this we will have to see what sort of non-conference games the teams have scheduled. I don't see that any team has released their non-conference schedule yet. I will keep checking the U of M Site for their announcement.

The Bisons first three weeks are away, bye, away. And 3 of their first 4 series are away against the other playoff teams from last year. So if they survive the start it should be clear sailing.

Instead of playing the extra series against geographic rivals, the Bisons will play UBC and Calgary 3 series each (i.e. 6 games). Oddly, their last two home series are both against UBC. When Mount Royal joins the league next year I suppose they will have a home and away series against each team, without bye weeks.

Here's a quick summary (there is nothing on their site as yet):

2011
Sept 30-Oct 1 Manitoba at Calgary
Oct 14-15 Manitoba at Alberta
Oct 21-22 Regina at Manitoba
Nov 4-5 Manitoba at Saskatchewan
Nov 11-12 Lethbridge at Manitoba
Nov 18-19 Manitoba at UBC
Nov 25-26 Calgary at Manitoba
Dec 2-3 Alberta at Manitoba

2012
Jan 6-7 Manitoba at Regina
Jan 20-21 Saskatchewan at Manitoba
Jan 27-28 Manitoba at Lethbridge
Feb 3-4 UBC at Manitoba
Feb 10-11 Manitoba at Calgary
Feb 17-18 UBC at Manitoba

Now with the NHL schedule coming out I can strategically draft games when my group gets together.

There is precious little in other news these days. Still no recruiting announcements at all from Calgary. South Campus Sports has a story about Der Fuhrer Dave Adolph returning in Hillbilly-land to coach the Banjo-Mutts. They have had, on paper, solid recruiting classes in recent years and two early playoff exits to show for it.

EUROPEAN TOUR

Image Image Image Image

I have found information on the first leg of the Bisons' pre-season European tour. They will be in a tournament in Renon (Italy) August 27-28 where they will play two of the following:
* SV Renon (aka Ritten)
* Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven
* HC Pusteral Wolfe (aka HC Val Pusteria)

I linked to the Google translate links for the team sites. The Italian sites were in German!

Fischtown is a German 2nd div team for whom several Bison grads have played in the past (Paul Deniset, Rob Smith, and Chris Falloon come to mind). The other two are from the Italian league. Pusteral was 1st and Renon was 4th last year.

I believe the Bisons are in the Bremerhaven tournament Sept 2-3 and also will play in Austria. I will seek out details.

Possible recruit:

Jacob DeSerres is a goaltender with 5 full seasons in major junior, with Seattle and Brandon in the WHL and then going East to win the Memorial Cup with St. John in 2011. The Brandon Sun reports that he has been signed by the Phoenix Coyotes to attend their prospects camp and after that he may join the Herd.
If he plays CIS hockey, it would likely be with the University of Manitoba Bisons. "I talked to (Bisons coach) Mike Sirant a lot through the year," DeSerres said. "It's a good team and they're losing their goalie, (Steve) Christie.

They also have an older story about former Bison captain Kip Workman heading to Holland. The team is callled "Eaters Geleen". He was with the Colorado Eagles in the CHL last year.

A potential walk-on is forward Kyle Turgeon, as reported in the Fort Frances Times. He is from that area and played for the Portage Terriers last year, and is attending the U of M this fall.

Another recruit?

Blair Holmes - left wing - Neepawa Natives
- The Natives announced that he is going to the U of M but don't say for sure that he will be playing for the Bisons. The Bisons often do not send press releases for the commitments of Junior "A" recruits, and have released nothing on this one. The story is also at the MJHL site. He is likely trying out. It seems that the team will need some forward depth. Here's how they describe him:
Holmes played a total of 178 games for the Natives, setting a number of team records in face-offs wins, blocked shots and even strength plus / minus. Holmes also collected a few pieces of hardware during his time with the Natives organization. 2008 / 2009 – Most Improved Player, 2009 / 2010 – Named Team Alternate Captain, Unsung Hero Award and Hardest Worker Award, 2010 / 2011 – Named Team Alternate Captain, Hardest Worker Award and Coaches Choice Award.
He only had 10 goals in 169 regular season games. So he would be a 4th liner/PK kind of guy.

Other news:

Image The H0rny Ones announced that they have recruited two goaltenders, namely Spokane Chief James Reid and Lethbridge Hurricane Dylan Tait. Scott Bowles is returning for them in goal, so it could be a season of bench-arming for them.

FOUR EXHIBITION GAMES WITH COUGARS!

The Bison Schedule Page now has 2011-12 instead of 2010-11 posted. There is no posting on their European games. The new information is that they will have two home series in their exhibition schedule after their return from Europe, all against Cougars! (It is always great news when you hear about lots of cougars coming to town on back to back weekends.) The Mount Royal Cougars (who will join the CW next year) will be here September 16th at 7:00 and 17th at 2:30 (for the now traditional hockey game at the same time as the homecoming football game). Then the Regina Cougars will be here on September 23rd at 7:00 and 24th at 2:30.

Regina's schedule is also up. In addition to Manitoba, they will play Sask and Briercrest Sept 9th-10th and then host a tournament against Brock and Sask on Sept 17th-18th.

Mount Royal's schedule is up and they will play the Okotoks Oliers (AJHL) on Sept 7th, a home-and-home with Lethbridge on Sept 9th-10th, and will go to Edmontown on Sept 23rd=24th to play Lethbridge and Alberta.

Saskatchewan's schedule has nothing but "TBD" but does confirm that they will be in Regina and Edmontown. I infer that they will play Briercrest and Brock on the weekend days that Regina is not playing them. They are also in Edmontown Sept 23rd-24th. I would also infer that they would play Lethbridge and Alberta on the days opposite Mount Royal, unless Calgary and/or UBC are included in that mix.

UBC's and Calgary's schedules have only the conference games listed. Alberta has nothing at all since last season ended. Lethbridge has nothing new on their schedule, but have uploaded other stories, such as this one about former coaches Mike Babcock and Bill Peters reuniting in Detroit.

I have no word yet on any NCAA exhibition games, but I suspect that UBC and Calgary will be playing down south.

Putting it all together, I get this:

Sept 7th Mount Royal at Okotoks Oilers
Sept 9th Regina at Saskatchewan
Sept 9th Lethbridge at Mount Royal
Sept 10th Briercrest College at Regina
Sept 10th Mount Royal at Lethbridge
Sept 11th Briercrest College at Saskatchewan*

Sept 16th Mount Royal at Manitoba
Sept 16th Brock v Saskatchewan (at Regina)*
Sept 17th Mount Royal at Manitoba
Sept 17th Brock at Regina
Sept 18th Saskatchewan at Regina

Sept 23rd Regina at Manitoba
Sept 23rd Mount Royal v Lethbridge (at Edmontown)
Sept 23rd Saskatchewan at Alberta*
Sept 24th Regina at Manitoba
Sept 24th Lethbridge v Saskatchewan (at Edmontown)*
Sept 24th Mount Royal at Alberta

* my inference only

UPDATE TIME

Image The Ritten site has an update in that there is now a roster change for their tournament. HC Val Pusteria (aka HC Pusteral) are out and the WSV Sterzing Broncos are in. Manitoba boy, and former Moose, Dirk Southern plays for the Broncos.

Here is the schedule, with opponents yet to be assigned:
27.08.2011 - 16:00 Clock - Game 1
27.08.2011 - 20:00 Clock - Game 2
28.08.2011 - 16:00 Clock - Loser 1 - Loser 2
28.08.2011 - 20:00 Clock - Winner 1 - Winner 2

Participating teams: Ritten Sport Renault Trucks, Fischtown Penguin Bremerhaven, Manitoba Bisons, WSV Sterzing Broncos

I have no further word on the rest of the Bison tour of Europe.

Image The Calgary Dinos announced their recruits, and this was also analyzed at South Campus Sports. The belief is that this is phase one of announcements for the Dinos. The players are:

Tyler Fiddler - forward - Calgary Hitmen (WHL)
David Robinson - forward - Vernon Vipers (BCHL)
Max Ross - forward - Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL)
Taylor Stefishen - forward - Prince George Cougars (WHL)

Image In a speculative story about the Evil Monkeys' recruits at South Campus Sports, a story from the Tri-City Herald was cited which advises that Jarrett Toll has left the Monkeys to pursue his career in the NLL. The U of A site has had nothing new posted since last season ended, not even a schedule update. However the speculation is that they will announce a recruiting class en masse.

EURO TOUR SCHEDULE UPDATE

Aug. 26 Manitoba Bisons @ Rosenheim Starbulls
Aug. 27-28 Ritten Tournament - schedule TBA v Fischtown Pinguins, Ritten, Sterzing
Sep. 1 Manitoba Bisons @ Graz 99ers
Sep. 3 Manitoba Bisons @ Landshut Cannibals

Image The Rosenheim Starbulls' roster includes many Canadians, one of whom is former Thrasher golatender Norm Maracle. He turned pro with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1994-95. He was up-and-down with the Red Wings then was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999-2000. He was also up and down with them until going to Russia in 2003-04. He has been in Europe ever since.

Image The Graz 99ers are in the top Austrian league. Amongst their players is former NHLer Guillaume Lefebvre.

Image The Landshut Cannibals have a peculiar name and logo. Remember that Bugs Bunny cartoon where he encounters cannibals on a remote island? This team relies mostly on German players rather than imports. One import is Cody Thornton, who played three seasons for Saint Mary's in the CIS. He had 64 goals in 83 CIS games, and 20 goals in 45 German games last year. Here's a look at their jersey:

Although there is nothing new to report on the Bisons, there are some stories about their opponents.

Image A non-story seemed to generate a lot of attention from the Monkey enclosure at the Canada West zoo. The Evil Monkeys announced their open tryout process. Yawn. But since they have otherwise done nothing on their website since the end of last year (but for the coaching change) this story also made it to the Boxscore News amid speculation that no feces throwers were being attracted to Saudi Alberta this year. So South Campus Sports chimed in with a "this means nothing" story. (Which is, of course, true.) In one site update, instead of listing last season's schedules and scores they now list "no games scheduled".

Image With the Bisons off to central Europe to start the pre-season, Regina stepped into the breach and will take their banjos to tour the Excited States. The Regina schedule page confirms they are at North Dakota on October 1st and at Bemidji on October 2nd.

Image The UBC schedule page also has their exhibition schedule. As per usual, they will not face any CW teams in pre-season. They will host the BCIHL's Thompson Rivers Wolfpack on Sept 17th and the ACAC's SAIT Condoms on Sept 24th. Then from October 1st to 3rd they will play a tough road-trip against Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota, and Minnesota-Mankato.

Image The Fischtown Pinguins announced that they have signed former Bison Kevin Saurette. He joined the Reading Royals of the ECHL after the 2006 season ended and then split two seasons between Reading and Bingo of the AHL. He has since played three seasons in Germany.

Image The BCIHL made no announcement but I see that the Fraser Valley Cascades are not operating this year. They play in other sports in the CIS and BCCAC. They had a record of 2-20-2 last year. But in prior years were right up there in the standings, including 13-10-1 in 2009-10. Eastern Washington is joining the league.

Image The North Dakota soon-to-be-former-Fighting-Sioux announced that they will play the Clarkson Golden Knights at the MTS Centre on January 7th when the Herd is in Regina. Why this would not be arranged for the following weekend when the Bisons could have played is a mystery. It is about time the Bisons got themselves a home game against UND.

EVIL MONKEYS AND BANJO-CATS ANNOUNCE RECRUITS
..... AND EUROPEAN TEAMS OPEN CAMP

Although there is no new news about the Bisons out there, two rivals announced their recruiting classes. Also, some of their European tour opponents have made preparations for their training camps, which open this week.

Otherwise, none of the CW teams have announced training camp rosters and Saskatchewan, Alberta, Lethbridge, and Calgary have not released schedules either. So the fast-approaching exhibition season remains a bit of a mystery.

Image Nine feces-throwing primates were recruited to play for the University of Saudi Alberta. The Evil Monkeys announced their nine player recruiting class en masse. Three of those are hoping to escape the zoo via NHL tryouts. The picks are evaluated (complete with video links) at South Campus Sports. Josh Koper who will be attending Jets camp, Jordan Hickmott is headed to Rangers camp, and Brett Ferguson who got an invite from the Oilers. The players are (all WHL except where noted):
- Levko Koper - forward - Spokane
- Kruise Reddick - forward - Tri-City
- Brett Ferguson - forward - Red Deer
- Jordan Hickmott - forward - Edmonton
- James Dobrowolski - forward - Prince George
- Travis Toomey - forward - Seattle
- Jordan Rowley - defence - Prince Albert
- Thomas Carr - defence - Medicine Hat
- Barron Smith - defence - Peterborough (OHL)

The Monkeys apparently have nine returning forwards, five d-men, and 3 goaltenders. I don't have all the names but gone are their top two scorers, Derek Ryan and Chad Klassen, captain Eric Hunter, and Kyle Fecho on defence. I had understood that their main concern this year was the recruitment of new d-men. However, the group is very heavy with forwards.

Image The Regina announcement was bound to pale in comparison. They had previously announced seven recruits. But one, goaltender Andrew Hayes from Cape Breton (QMJHL), evidently had a change of heart. They replaced him with Lucas Gore, a fine goaltender from the Chilliwack Bruins. The others (Joel Kot and Blaine Tendler) are d-men who played in the WHL before finishing their junior careers as Junior "A" over-agers. Here's their whole list:
- Liam Brennan - Forward - Augustana College (ACAC)
- Tyler Henry - Forward - Bonnyville (AJHL)
- Troy Hunter - Forward - Estevan (SJHL)
- Dayton Fossum – Defence - La Ronge (SJHL)
- Mark Schneider - Defence- Regina (WHL)
- John Sonntag – Defence - Kindersley (SJHL)
- Lucas Gore - Goalie - Chilliwack (WHL)
- Joel Kot - Defence - Estevan (SJHL)
- Blaine Tendler - Defence - Yorkton (SJHL)

Image Ritten/Renon Sport has a brief tournament update, but still not an indication as to which team will face the Bisons in the semi-final round. The hosts also have a new goaltender, Karol Krizan from Slovakia via the Swedish elite league amongst others.

Image The Landshut Cannibals have opened camp. They should be really well-prepared when they face the Bisons. I have no word as to whether the Bisons will practice here before leaving. If not, they would be at a serious disadvantage.

They play at Calgary on Sept 10th, have a home-and-home with cross-town rivals NAIT Ooks on Sept 16th-17th, then host their Brick Invitational on Sept 23rd-24th. They did not announce the participating teams nor the schedule for that event. They will also venture to the SAIT invitational January 2nd-3rd.

Image Using the information from Alberta, along with the previous updates from Regina and UBC, I have pieced together an updated non-conference schedule for the Canada West teams. Lethbridge, Saskatchewan, and Calgary have yet to update their websites.

Image UBC announced a whole set of eight recruits, in addition to the four from June:
- Marc-Antoine Juneau - forward - Bonnyville Pontiacs (AJHL)
- Marcus Toye - forward - Drumheller Dragons (AJHL)
- Nathan Fleming - forward - Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL) & York Lions (CIS)

- Brendon Wall - defence - Kelowna Rockets (WHL) and Melfort Mustangs (SJHL)
- Scott Brkich - defence - Melfort Mustangs (SJHL)

Image Most teams in the CW appear to have announced complete recruiting classes. There is still nothing from Sask. Calgary and Lethbridge have announced some names but we await their full announcements. Also, most teams still have their 2010-11 roster posted but most have their current schedule. Here is a quick summary:
Manitoba Roster - 2010-11 : Schedule - 2011-12
Regina Roster - 2011-12 : Schedule - 2011-12 : most up-to-date web site in the CW!
Saskatchewan : no roster page and main page schedule has opponents TBA
Alberta Roster - 2011-12 - is blank : Main Page - has 2011-12 schedule but for Brick Invitational
Calgary Roster - 2010-11 : Schedule - 2011-12 - does not include non-conference games
Lethbridge Roster - 2010-11 - on main page: Schedule - 2011-12 - does not include non-conference games
UBC Roster - 2010-11 : Schedule - 2011-12
