The MM has released their schedule for the semi-final series. They are using an easy-to-remember Tuesday-Friday-Sunday pattern. Charleswood plays out of the Eric Coy Arena, the Raiders play at the Billy Mosienko Arena, and Pembina Valley is based in Morris. For the next round of the playoffs, Fort Garry will be using the St. James Civic Centre instead of their usual digs at the Century Arena.

This is getting crazy. Two more road wins in the MJ last night, making the away teams an amazing 6-0 so far in the division finals. I was listening to Selkirk-Winkler on the internet. Winkler blew a 4-1 second period lead. Dauphin also had a 3-0 lead before Portage mounted a comeback. Both series continue Friday.

The MM semis got underway. The Hawks win is very expected. But the Twisters-Twins is considered a toss-up. Both of those series also continue on Friday.

There Hawks aren't losing to anyone, too good.

Although I do hope the PV-Twins series goes seven, and the finals do as well so that there is a chance the series is still going when I return home to Winnipeg April 19th, I would love to be at the Coy for another championship, that would be sweet!

So, a home team finally wins a game in the MJHL! Selkirk's emphatic win over Winkler gives them a 3-1 lead. But Portage's win in Dauphin made it 4-0 for the away team in that one as the series is now tied. Winkler faces elimination at home on Saturday night.

In the MM both series are now 2-0. The Hawks have dusted off the Raiders twice. The Twisters are in tough against the Twins. Both series resume Sunday night.

Good luck with that. If they stick to Tuesday-Friday-Sunday then you might see game 6 also.

Winkler joins Selkirk as teams to have won at home in this round of the MJ playoffs. It is hard to believe that they won by 8-2. Selkirk still leads the series 3-2. The other series in both leagues continue Sunday night.

What is up with the recent trend to one-sided games? Portage hammered Dauphin in the MJ, for the first win by a home team in the series. Portage and Selkirk both carry 3-2 leads into Tuesday's game sixes.

In the MM, the Hawks seem destined to win another in 4 straight. Despite tonight's big win, the Twins still trail the Twisters 2-1. I still suspect a long series there.

The MJ is now down to two: Selkirk and Portage. Hmmm, both a nice little drive from Winnipeg. Could be worth a trip. Selkirk won both OT games which was the difference in their series. Portage's win on Tuesday was their third in Dauphin in the series.

In the MM, Charleswood swept as expected. The Twins and Twisters are now 2-2 and each has an OT win. Game 5 is at the Civic Centre on Friday night and I am penciled in to be there.

April 1, 2011

The MJ got their final underway and all the scoring came in the 2nd period as Selkirk claimed a 3-2 victory. Both sides have had recent success in the MJ, with Selkirk winning their 10th Turnbull Cup in 2007 and Portage winning their 5th and 6th in 2008 and 2009. Portage finished with 87 points and Selkirk 81, meaning this is likely going to be a long series.

I was at the St. James Civic Centre to watch the MM semi-final. The Twins' 4-3 OT win was the 3rd game of the series to finish 4-3 in OT, and fourth game to finish 4-3. So will the series finish 4-3? The Twisters hope so. Once up 2-0, the Twisters will be facing elimination when the teams meet Sunday night in Morris.

The Twins seemed to take control of the game in the 1st period. They had a 2-0 lead and a 12-5 edge in SOG. Although the Twins had the first and last PPs of the period, in between the Twisters had four PPs and were -1, giving up a short-handed goal.

However, the Twisters mounted a comeback and scored the only goal of the 2nd period. The Twins barely threatened, registering only 6 SOG in the period.

The 3rd period was back-and-forth and there was only one penalty. The Twisters scored twice to claim a 3-2 lead. However, the Twins inevitably tied the game 8 minutes in and that led to 12 minutes of desperation hockey as each side tried in vane to get the winning goal.

The overtime was all over in 22 seconds. An unchecked Twin cashed a rebound into a wide-open net.

Of note, the teams combined to go 0-for-12 on the PP.

The away teams continue to dominate in the MJ. The final is 1-1 with the away team winning each game. Game 3 goes Tuesday in Portage.

The MM semi-final is going 7. The Twisters snapped a 3 game losing streak in yet another tight game. The decisive game will go Tuesday at the Civic Centre. I suspect the final will start on Friday at the Eric Coy, but we'll see.

The Puppies became the first home team to chalk up a win in the MJ final and now have a 2-1 lead. The series goes Friday in Selkirk and Saturday in Portage. My preliminary plan is to see the Moose-Bulldogs game on Friday and then see game 5 in Portage's new arena. There were some stand-out stats. Portage outshot Selkirk 43-31, and 21-9 in the 3rd period. Selkirk also took all 5 minors and a 10 minute misconduct (from a hit from behind) doled out in the 3rd period. The winning goal came with 7 seconds left.

In the MM, it must have been quite a goaltenders' duel as the Twins edged the Twisters 2-1 in a game where the SOG were 40-39 for the Twisters. The schedule for the final is TBA but I suspect it will be Friday at the Eric Coy and Sunday at the Civic Centre then going Tuesday-Friday-Sunday until done.

While I was watching the Moose on Friday night, I followed along for junior results via Blackberry. In the MJ, the Puppies shut-out the Steelers 3-0 while outshooting them 48-22, including an incredible 24-6 in the 3rd period. I plan on a Saturday night road trip for game 5 in Portage.

In the MM final, Charleswood built a 4-1 lead 5 minutes into the 3rd but then were forced into OT. They are now 9-0 in the playoffs.

The Puppies are the champs! I ventured out to see the brand new PCU Centre on Saturday and it was great. (Just don't order the popcorn.) They had an overflow crowd of 2,004 which included 300+ in standing room. The Terriers will face either the Yorkton Terriers or Laronge Ice Wolves in the Anavet Cup.

The game was over early. Portage scored twice in the 1st minute of the 1st period and were then able to cruise all night.

Portage should be a good rep. They did not dominate the league but were 1st overall, albeit by a slight margin. The series goes Friday and Saturday in Portage. The rest is TBA.
