Now that the Bison season has ended, time to look at the MJHL and MMJHL. The MMJHL season just ended on Sunday, but the MJHL playoffs are already underway. Here's where it stands:

March 3: Swan Valley 1 Portage 2 (OT)

March 8: Saints @ Selkirk
March 9: Selkirk @ Saints
March 11: Saints @ Selkirk
March 13: Selkirk @ Saints
March 15: Saints @ Selkirk

The MJHL site is kind of hard to navigate. The above link for schedule/results will get you to the playoff schedule even though it says "regular". You just need to go to the drop-down menu.

For boxscores, you need to go to the SCORES tab and then go to the day you want on the calendar.

The Saints will be playing their home games at the MTS Iceplex. If you have not been there yet then check it out for the playoffs. As you can see by looking at the scores, the teams are evenly matched and all but two games have been decided by one goal.

Go Kings!
Although they're not the same team as last year. If they make it past OCN, Portage will more than likely kill them. Unless they play the games of their lives. But with Marlin Murray at the helm, you know all his best players will be burned out before long. You gotta play more than two lines!

I sadly haven't seen even ONE game this year.
The best part of moving from Winnipeg to Calgary?

NO Westwood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

I guess that Swan deserved a win after two OTLs. All four series resume Tuesday night.

With my son playing hockey and us having Bison and Moose tickets, I was only able to see one regular season game in the MMJHL this year, that being a shoot-out upset win by St. James against Charleswood. If you take a peek at the standings you will see just how imbalanced the league is. You will also see that the Seven Oaks Raiders are now just the Raiders Junior Hockey Club. They have new ownership and a new look (switching from black and yellow to Coyotes' maroon). They have also bounced into the mid-range of teams in this league.

For many of us, playoffs are the time we can best get out to games. After minor hockey ends and before baseball or other summer sports start. Swan is giving Portage a good battle. So I wouldn't count anybody out.

March 8, 2011

This marks the busiest night possible on the local junior hockey front. All eight series had games. The only game on Wednesday is Selkirk-Saints at the Iceplex.

In the MMJHL, St. B. gave Charleswood quite a run for their money. However, the shots were 49-22 for the Hawks so maybe the game was not as tight as the score would suggest. The other three openers were not very close.

In the MJHL, Dauphin and Selkirk posted convincing wins to grab 2-1 series leads. The other two series are 2-2 and seem very tight. Three straight OT games in the W-W series.

Here's a snapshot of the complete picture:

A light night in the MJ tonight. Selkirk has taken control of the Saints. I don't know the Pro-Line odds on Friday's game but I'd have heavy money on Selkirk finishing the series.

Dauphin grabbed a 3-1 lead and Portage a 3-2 lead in their series. These have been tough series but I suspect we'll be seeing Dauphin v Portage for the division title. The other two series resume on Friday in Winkler and Selkirk.

One would think that the #4 v #5 series would be tight, so the fact that the Raiders-Vics are 1-1 makes sense. But both games have been one-sided. Oddly, all 9 goals were scored at the same end of the rink. The other three series resume Friday.

The W-W series is awesome. Four straight OT games must be at or near a record. Although CKMW has a website, they have no on-line option. And if 1570 doesn't come in on your house radio, you used to be screwed. But now Pembina Valley On-line has audio streaming. Selkirk really dominated the Saints. Now to see MJHL playoffs a road-trip will be necessary.

Due to hazardous travel, the Fort Garry @ Stonewall and Pembina Valley @ St. James games were rescheduled from Friday to Saturday night. The Charleswood Hawks put an exclamation point on their win over St. B. IMO, there is too much imbalance in the MM.

OCN trimmed Dauphin's series lead to 3-2 and now return home with a chance to even the series. Portage was #1 in the season so a 6 game win over Swan seems about right. The only game on Sunday night is Winkler @ Wayway.

In the MM the only games on Saturday night were the two postponed from Friday. Fort Garry is one team capable of throwing a scare into Charleswood and one would think they'll take out Stonewall. Pembina Valley must feel relief after drawing level with underdogs St. James. All four series resume Sunday night.

Winkler and Selkirk will now be meeting in the Addison Division final. Portage awaits the winner of the OCN v Dauphin series (Dauphin leads 3-2), which continues Monday at The Pas. Winkler v Selkirk should be a good one. Winkler was first in the division with 83 points and Selkirk was only 2 points behind them. I may just have to make a road trip to Portage to see their new rink.

March 16, 2011 - PREVIEW

Dauphin Kings v OCN Blizzard

Game 7 goes Wednesday night in Dauphin and is available on-line through 730CKDM.ca and on video through Neulion at MJHL Live. There may also be an OCN broadcast available through CJ1240 and ThePasOnline.com.

One unique thing I have noticed is that each team has a 5-2, 2-1, and 3-2 (OT) win so far.

Image Image

In other news there were fines and suspensions following a post-game brawl in Swan following their elimination by Portage. The MJHL announced the following:
Stampeders’ Jesse Enns has been given a 40-game suspension for receiving a Match Penalty for checking from behind with three seconds to go in the game on March 12 in Swan River. Assistant coaches Dallas Anderson (Swan Valley) and Jim Tkachyk (Portage Terriers) have both been given 22-game suspensions each for their participation in the post-game incident which took place after the Terriers had eliminated the Stampeders in their Sher-Wood Division playoff series.

Both assistant coaches were also fined $1,500 apiece.

Stampeders’ Head coach Dwayne Kirkup also received a two-game suspension and $1,000 fine for receiving a Gross Misconduct Penalty, and not having proper control of the players on the bench.

I was able to listen to some of game 7, and it must have been quite a game. OCN outshot Dauphin 14-4 in the 1st period but could not score. The teams traded goals early in the 3rd period and then nothing. Dauphin then scored 55 seconds into OT. They had over 2,000 fans at the D-CUP. The remaining series should be close. In the regular season, Portage had 87 points, Winkler 83, and Portage and Selkirk 81 each.

Since I was at the Moose game Friday night I did not listen to any junior action on radio, but did follow along on the BlackBerry. it was quite a night for the underdogs on the road, as they won 4 out of 5 games.

In the MJ it was a case where one big period decided the game. Winkler led Selkirk 2-1 heading into the 3rd then surrendered 4 3rd period goals. Dauphin scored 4 in the second period of their win over Portage. The MJHL has a Mobile Site.

In the MM the favourites all held 3-1 leads heading into game 5 but only Fort Garry booked their second round ticket. St. James and St. Vital will both be seeking to force a game 7 when they play a home Sunday night. If St. James wins their series, they would play Charleswood and the Raiders-Vics winner would play Fort Garry. But if Pembina Valley wins they would play Fort Garry and the Raiders-Vics winner would face Charleswood.

March 20, 2011

In the MJ the away teams swept yet again, leaving both series tied 1-1. Portage broke open a 2-2 tie with three goals in the 3rd period to even their series with Dauphin. Meanwhile Winkler led Selkirk throughout their game and in fact it was 4-1 at one time. Both series continue Tuesday and Friday.

The final four in the MM is now set as both favourites won their series Sunday night. It will be Charleswood v Raiders and Fort Garry v Pembina Valley. I suspect both series will start on Friday, but Tuesday is a possibility. The formerly Seven Oaks Raiders will be definite underdogs but at least they made it this far. Last year they were dead last at 3-42!
