I may just get a chance to go to Portage next weekend if it goes that far. LaRonge was first in the SJ with 86 points and Portage was first in the MJ with 87 points. So, one would call this a close one. Dauphin beat LaRonge in last year's series by 4-1. The winner will qualify for the nationals with three other regional winners and the hosts from Camrose.

It was nice to hear that the Terriers beat the champs of Banjoland to open the Anavet Cup final before another big crowd in Portage. It would be worth a drive to see game 2 on Saturday night. Portage built a 3-0 lead early in the 2nd period but then LaRonge tied it up with 3 goals on 6 shots! All in all, Portage held them to 22 shots on goal.

I was at the Civic Centre to see the Hawks sweep the Twins to complete their 3rd straight sweep en route to yet another MMJHL championship. They now have 6 titles in 7 years, and 8 in the last 10.

The stands on the Charleswood side were pretty much full, with most fans anticipating the sweep. It was a wide-open affair. The Hawks outshot the Twins 54-37. The Hawks never trailed in the game. They broke it open with a pair of goals early in the 3rd period to claim a 6-3 lead. However, in mid-period the Twins rallied with a pair of their own (both on the PP) to make it 6-5. An empty-netter closed out the scoring.

A 3 goal 2nd period paced the Terriers to a decisive victory and a 2-0 lead in the Anavet Cup final. The stats appear to be fairly one-sided in favour of Portage so far. But with the series switching back to the 18th century (aka Saskatchewan), LaRonge should get a boost.

RBC CUP - REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS

The Anavet Cup winner will go to the RBC Cup, being played in Camrose, Alberta this year. The Camrose Kodiaks will qualify as the host team. Here is how the other cups shake down: The CJHL Website has links to all teams and leagues.

Doyle Cup - Pacific Region

Vernon Vipers v Spruce Grove Saints

Best-of-7 series between the winners of the BC and Alberta leagues. The series is tied 1-1 with game 3 Sunday. Oddly, games 1-3 are being played in Vernon and then the remainder will be played in Spruce Grove.

Dudley Hewitt Cup - Central Region

Image Image Image Image
Wisconsin Wilderness v Soo Eagles
v Wellington Dukes v Huntsville Otters

This is a 4 team tournament for the winners of the OJHL, the SIJHL, and the NOJHL. The OJHL is the biggest league and were once over 30 teams. They have been trying to down-size to make their league better. The SIJHL is the smallest league, based in an d around Thunder Bay, and gain and lose teams every year. Anyhow, the 3 leagues take turns hosting the 3 league champs. This year the Huntsville Otters are the hosts. The tournament runs April 19th to 23rd.

Fred Page Cup - Eastern Region

Pembrooke Lumber Kings v Longeuil College
v Summerside Capitals v Terrebonne Cobras

This is also a 4 team tournament for the winners of the CCHL, the QJHL, and the MHL. The tournament runs April 20th to 24th in Terrebonne, Quebec. The CCHL used to be the CJHL, and is based in and around the Ottawa area.

OK, for the games in LaRonge the MJHL updates were not providing anything but the score. So I went through the SJHL website and eureka! It's HERE. The Terriers had rough games on Tuesday and Wednesday. But on Thursday they bounced back and took a convincing win and a 3-2 series lead. The series turns to Portage for games Saturday and Sunday, if required.

The Terriers had 40 shots on goal but could not score. LaRonge scored once in the 1st period and that was all they needed. Game 7 goes in Portage Sunday at 7:30 p.m. If you want a seat, get tickets early. As you read this it could be standing room only, if that. The place should be rockin'.

The Terriers have won the Anavet Cup on behalf of the MJHL. Over the last 10 years each province has now won 5 titles. They will now go to Camrose for the RBC Cup, the successor to the Centennial Cup. They will face the Vernon Vipers and Pembroke Lumber Kings (both perennial reps), the Wellington Dukes, and the Camrose Kodiaks.
