WRAP UP THE UNDERCARD, LOOK AHEAD TO MAIN EVENT

There is another story on Mexico's tournament at IIHF.com. The fans appeared to be into the game:

The Division I tournaments have now concluded.

Division I A was played in Netherlands and was won by Austria. They defeated Ukraine 2-1 in the final game of the round-robin. So Austria will move to the world's top division next year. Ukraine will remain in Division I with Japan, Netherlands, and Lithuania. Serbia was relegated to Division II. The story on the final day is also at IIHF.com.

Division I B was played in Slovenia and the hosts are back in the top division. They defeated Hungary 4-1 in the final round-robin game which was in fact a 1st place showdown. Slovenia got there with a 3-2 win over Poland and a 4-3 overtime win over Britain. Hungary, Poland, Britain, and Korea will remain in Division I. Croatia was relegated to Division II. The story on the final day is also at IIHF.com.

The stories on the British run through the tournament are here:

Germany's win over the USA was played before over 77,000 in a soccer stadium which has a retractable roof. Coupled with Denmark's win over Finland, the group is in a state of turmoil. The loser of Finland v USA could be in trouble.

Canada's group (with the Swiss and Latvians) is proceeding by the form chart. I saw bits of Canada's game and Italy seemed happy to be there. Anyhow the result proved one thing: SOCCER SUCKS.

The vaunted Russians had a solid win over plucky Slovakia. But not enough to scare the pants off the contenders. Belarus had a come-from-behind win over The Land of Borat. In this pool, Belarus could not have afforded a loss.

The Czechs and Swedes disposed of France and Norway in much the same way Canada disposed of Italy. BTW, Canada will be playing the top 3 teams in this pool in the next round.

Holy crap! The Excited States are now 0-2 with yet another OT loss to a perceived non-contender. They have to win what could be a relegation game with Finland, no easy task.

The good news is TC is now 2-0 and with 6 points are sailing through to the 2nd round, and in fact are as close to clinching a quarter-final berth as they could be. The bad news is captain Ryan Smyth is out with an injury, as reported at TSN.ca.

Russia has salted away Group A, with 6 points. Belarus and Slovakia each have 3 while Kazakhstan has 0. I don't think Belarus can upset Russia, or that Kazakhstan has a shot against Slovakia.

However, there are loads of possibilities in Group C where Norway has upset the Czechs. France also put up a good fight against Sweden. Once this pool is decided the top 3 will meet up with Canada.

The loss to the Swiss is not good for TC. But at the same time, it is not critical. Both sides advance to the 2nd round, along with Latvia. More concerning is the injury to Stamkos and the problems in getting replacement players. Jordan Eberle could become a regular. Sidney Crosby declined an invite. Is Jimmy Roy nearby?

The Finns' win over the Yanks sends the Excited States to the relegation round. This is actually typical for the USA. They get a couple of good results (WJC gold, Olympic silver) then follow with this. Seen it before, people. The Germans, Danes, and Finns all carry 3 points forward to the 2nd round.

The form chart was basically followed on the final day of round 1. The 2-1 win for the Czechs over Sweden was, naturally, a toss-up. After a loss to Norway the Czechs really needed the win so that they could enter round 2 with some points. So Sweden, Norway, and the Czech Republic will advance and, like Canada, carry 3 points with them.

Russia remain unbeaten. Slovakia enters round 2 tied with Germany, Denmark, and Finland with 3 points each. Belarus advance but with no points carried forward have to play catch-up.

Here are the new groups for round 2, with their points carried forward from round 1:

Group E
Russia (6)
Germany (3)
Denmark (3)
Slovakia (3)
Finland (3)
Belarus (0)

Group F
Switzerland (6)
Canada (3)
Sweden (3)
Czech Republic (3)
Norway (3)
Latvia (0)

The bounce-back win after a loss to Switzerland was nice. But let's not get over-excited. Eberle looked sharp as a rookie. And Mason Raymond is on his way, though Sidney Crosby turned down an invite. TC should now be in the quarter-finals. Once those games start the tournament becomes a crap-shoot.

The big surprise is Denmark ripping up Slovakia. Other "big 7" teams have lost here and in recent tournaments to the "minnows", but usually it is due to a hot goaltender in a game where the loser outshoots the winner something like 45-12. This, however, was a kicking. We could be seeing the Great Danes in a quarter-final game.

There is unbridled joy across the U.S.A. as their team has won their first game of the tournament. A convincing win over The Land of Borat greatly improves their chances at remaining in the world championships for next year. France also has an inside track on a return after their tight win over Italy.

Russia and Switzerland had similar stories, albeit with a different twist. Both enjoyed 3-2 wins to remain the tournament's only unbeaten teams. However, expectations for Russia have been very high and yet the host Germans could have easily beaten them. Meanwhile the Swiss win over the Czechs establishes their legitimacy as a contender in this event.

Canada did not look good against Sweden. Mason was shaky in goal, which always casts a doubt ion whether a team can rally. They have one round-robin game left (against the Czechs) and then will enter the quarter-finals. A loss could mean a quarter-final game against Russia.

The host Germans must be disappointed with their OTL against Belarus. Due to the point system, the Germans still hold 4th place. But their game against Slovakia should determine which side advances and which does not.

In the quarter-finals, the 1st place team in one pool plays the 4th place team from the other, and so on.
